Is 99.8 \% pure butanediol suitable for consumption?
Q: Is 99.8 % pure butanediol suitable for consumption?

A: Many chemicals of 99.8% purity are considered suitable for consumption, however, one should know what the impurities are and what the dangers of each of those are. The more pure, the better. It is quite possible (though unlikely) that the minor impurities could be extremely toxic or dangerous.

Foods & drugs intended for human consumption have to meet strict standards in the United States and in most modernized countries. It would be best if the 1,4-BD was manufactured under what is called GMP (Good Manufacturing Process), which is a series of stringent regulations on how chemicals are made for use as a drug. However, this is nearly impossible with the current legal status of this compound for recreational use.

Outside of impurity issues, there are other reasons to be concerned about 1,4 butanediol's effect on your health. With regular use, reports of health complications include physical addiction (defined by withdrawal symptoms with cessation of use), mental habitutation, heart palpitations and chest pain, anxiety attacks, insomnia, etc. There are also acute health risks with using "1,4-b" that are similar to those of GHB including vomiting, unconsciousness, and the extreme danger when these two coincide.
