NORFOLK -- A man who sold designer drugs, some of which made people ill, was sentenced today to nearly six years in prison.
Timothy C. Luken, 38, of the 2500 block of Granby St., previously pleaded guilty to conspiracy to distribute Ecstasy, Foxy and AMT. Judge Henry C. Morgan Jr. sentenced him to 70 months in prison.
Luken was formerly employed at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, where he used his position to check on patients who came in suffering from adverse drug reactions to see if they were people he sold drugs to, federal agents said.
A Navy investigator said several people became violently ill after purchasing drugs from Luken.
Foxy, a relatively new designer drug, is a hallucinogenic/stimulant similar to Ecstasy and AMT. All three come in pill or powder form and can increase sensory perception. Side effects include vomiting and insomnia.
Federal agents discovered in Luken's home enough suspected powdered Foxy to make more than 10,000 pills, officials said. At $15 a pill, the proceeds would have been $150,000.
Two other men, Richard L. Klecker and Michael D. Wolfe, both 22 and of Newport News, were charged in the case. Wolfe pleaded guilty and was sentenced to four years in prison, and Klecker's case is pending.
