1864 First report of the use of Tabernanthe iboga root as a stimulant and aphrodisiac in Gabon and the Congo, made by Griffon du Bellay, a doctor in the French navy, who took specimens to France. 1  
1889 The genus Tabernanthe is established and the botanical description of T. iboga is made by Henri Baillon at the Museum National d'Histoire Naturelle in Paris. 2  
late 19th Century The Fang of Gabon founded a syncretic Christian church called "Bwiti" which uses T. iboga in its initiation rites. The Fang believe that T. iboga use was originally discovered by the Pygmies.    [Details]
1901 Ibogaine first isolated from Tabernanthe iboga by Dybowsky and Landrin. 2  
1903 First report of the cultural use of Tabernanthe iboga as a visionary plant in the Congo. 1  
1939 An extract of Tabernanthe manii was sold in tablet form under the name Lambarene (the name of a city in Gabon), for the treatment of fatigue and depression. It contained .2 g extract per tablet, approximately 8 mg of ibogaine. It was popular among athletes who used it as a stimulant and to accelerate red blood cell production. Lambarene disappeared from the market around 1966. 2  
1962-1963 Howard Lotsof conducts experiments into Ibogaine's use in the treatment of cocaine and heroin addiction. 3  
1966 The complete synthesis of ibogaine is accomplished. 4  
Nov 22, 1967 Bufotenine, DET, and Ibogaine were placed under DACA control in the United States, making them illegal to possess, sell, or manufacture except for personal use. 5  
Oct 24, 1968 Possession of Ibogaine is banned federally in the U.S. after the passage of the Staggers-Dodd Bill (Public Law 90-639) which amended the Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act.   
1972 Ibogaine detected in some samples of street drugs in the U.S. 6   [Details]
1985 Ibogaine patented for use in treating Heroin addiction. 7  
1954-1958 The structure of the ibogaine molecule is determined. 4  
1989 Ibogaine added to the list of "doping substances" banned by the International Olympic Committee. 2
