10 mg oral Oxycodone
  650 mg oral Acetaminophen

Previous drug experience: Longtime coffee drinker and caffeine addict, heavy drinker for 2+ years. Smoked marijuana once while extremely drunk with disastrous consequences. At the time of this experience I had taken oxycodone daily for a week after surgery and had taken it intermittently as needed for pain over the next two weeks. Another bit of relevant information is that I suffered from undiagnosed and unrecognized major depression at the time.

On New Year's Eve, I had plans to go out with friends for dinner and then hang out afterwards to celebrate the new year. I had a terrible day at work and was suffering some acute pain following my surgery. I hadn't taken any oxycodone for several days and was hoarding what I had left from my presciption to use at whatever time I felt appropriate. I was in such a bad mood and in so much pain that I felt this would be a perfect time to dip into my remaining supply. I popped two 5/325 endocets about 20 minutes before I walked down to the restaurant to meet my friends.

On the short walk to the restaurant, I felt the depression, fog, annoyance, and pain begin to lift. I all of a sudden felt outstanding. I had no worries and was elated. I turned to my wife and told her that taking the oxy was a really good idea, and that I just felt amazing. At the restaurant I got a Diet Coke instead of alcohol. I certainly didn't need a drink when I was already completely euphoric.

Nobody commented that I seemed much different, though I eventually admitted that I had taken an opiate since people asked why I wasn't having a drink. I have a good poker face, what can I say.

The high lasted about two hours with a gentle return to baseline at about the 4 hour mark. Just in time for a glass of bubbly. I never became sleepy (nor have I ever had that effect from opiates) and I felt very clear-headed the entire time.

In retrospect this experience was the beginning of a small fling with opiates and cannabis, and the eventual decline in my alcohol consumption. It really opened my eyes to the beauty that can be contained within a drug and also gave me some indication that my general mood might not have been as good as it should have been.
