I have had issues with sleep, anxiety and just a overall feeling of uneasiness for about 5 years. I don't take any prescription drugs, I do take a multivitamin and niacin (slow release) and b-12 sub-lingual everyday.
I developed most of this in my late 30's and tried all the SSRIs, anti anxiety medications. Bottom line for me was that I could not take the medications either from side effects, or because they just weren't working or made things worse.
I was fortunate enough to find a ND who had me try several natural remedies, including extracted kava/kava, extracted valarien root. The skinny was that he was unable to fully help, the large dose of daily natural probiotics he prescribed from Kombucha was probably the best advice and I still drink it to this day (for mood). I was still having major issues with sleep, and some situational anxiety. My new Naturopathic doctor suggested I visit a well know Chinese Medicine doctor that was in a neighboring town signing a book. Anyway, sorry for the story, but this Chinese doctor looked at me, did some 5 second test and said, 'stress and sleep' that was my problem. He nailed it, then he said several things I needed to do, physical activity, meditation, and then he suggested I find what he called 'essence of lotus'

I went home happy, that I had someone with another possible clue. This Chinese doctor did say that Blue Lotus was used from everything from weight loss - bone building - anti-spastic - for sleep, etc. His point was that I needed to get the right formulation or preparation as I guess with many plants it has many different alkaloids.
I ordered from 2 different vendors ASAP (both were a 50/1). Neither vendors product did anything, even at up to x5 what was suggested (.5-1gram in tea before bed). I did get a sour stomach from the aforementioned vendors product. So, I gave up the idea for a while, until I remembered the Chinese doctor emphasizing that not all blue lotus was made the same and for the same conditions. I was hesitant to order from another supplier but found a vendor with 3 Blue Lotus, that they sold with 1, 2 and 5% nuciferine levels. I ordered the smallest of each to try one last time at finding some sleep! The 1% Nuciferine they sent WORKED!! I had to take 4 grams, but it was nice and relaxing and very easy to sleep and stay asleep, with NO HANGOVER in the morning. When I use Blue Lotus for sleep, I wake up feeling VERY cheerful and very pleasant! The 2% Nuciferine I got was a much darker color, a dark brown/almost black and had a taste that was like a VERY strong tea. It put me to sleep right @ 1gram, just as the doctor had said. The 5% which was even darker in color than the 2% was very good and I found that about .5 or 1/2 a gram would work for my sleeping problem.
As far as my anxiety goes I found that 1-3 grams of the 2% Nuciferine I get is best. The 5% nuciferine is great as well and takes about 1/2 as much, but is expensive for me. I take it in a mixture of 1 cup of water, making a tea and consume it 15 minutes before an expected 'event'. It leaves me very calm, focused, relaxed for about 7-9 hours. I really am amazed at how calm it makes me, for me the anti-anxiety meds made me calm but not care. This 2% Nuciferine 100/1 extract gives me the wonderful calm, but I can function and feels a lot like anti-anxiety meds without the 'zombie' effect.
