Long-Acting Induced Mania
Phenibut & Buproprion
Citation:   Gungadin. "Long-Acting Induced Mania: An Experience with Phenibut & Buproprion (exp104103)". Erowid.org. Sep 21, 2019. erowid.org/exp/104103

DOSE:
200 mg oral Pharms - Bupropion (daily)
  3 g oral Smarts - Phenibut (capsule)
BODY WEIGHT: 195 lb
I have experience with a wide range of psychoactive substances - traditional (shrooms, lsd, mdma, cocaine, ketamine etc.), prescription (benzos, opiates, etc.), ethnobotanical (lsa, yarrow, kratom, siniquiche, etc.), and rc (methoxetamine, 6APB, etc.). So I know the difference between placebo and real effects. This stuff is absolutely not just a placebo.

I tried phenibut in the past at lower dosages, as a simple mood booster, and hadn't really noticed any effects, so I had written the substance off. However, yesterday I decided to try it again, after reading some reports. The last time I tried it was before I started taking 200mg/day buproprion; buproprion is a known CYP2D6 enzyme inhibitor, which means it can increase the bioactivity of other substances. Not sure how much that was in play in this case.

I took exactly 3g (in 500mg pill form, which is pretty convenient) at around 7pm, as I had read that it had somewhat of a long onset. Somehow, though, I failed to understand *how long* the onset really is.
I failed to understand *how long* the onset really is.
It was over four hours before I started feeling anything appreciable, and five before I had really come up. It is now 9:30am the next day, and I am still definitely high, although I'm (maybe?) starting to come down. The high is not debilitating for work, conversation, writing, etc., but I wouldn't try to drive on it. Fortunately, I don't have to be anywhere for a while.

I would describe the high as pretty similar to low-dose kratom, in the sense that it increased energy and motivation and caused some inebriation (motor skills degradation, mild euphoria, slight visual 'tracking' like alcohol). It feels very much like a manic state, with all the plusses and minuses of that condition. So, a giddy sense of possibility, increased talkativeness, physical energy / desire for exercise, increased libido, and a generally expansive, empathetic mood for the positives; decreased inhibitions and increased likelihood of poor decision-making (unnecessary purchases, sexual promiscuity, etc.) for the negatives. I also awoke with a slight headache, but I've been having those lately anyway, probably due to dehydration (I've been doing a ketogenic diet, which can cause that.) I stayed up late last night playing guitar, which I haven't done for a while, and woke up in the night to urinate feeling very inebriated (stumbling, even). This morning, I awoke still quite inebriated, with a distinct desire to 'do all the things' (including writing this very long trip report, apparently). I felt especially loving toward my partner, and had vastly increased energy for my morning walk -- I actually had to restrain myself from running, in stark contrast to the day prior, when I felt like I was dragging myself down the street.

Overall, a very positive experience. I have the sense that, like kratom, tramadol, and other mood-boosting substances, I may end up paying for this later with increased irritability and/or exhaustion; a friend of mine refers to it as 'borrowing from tomorrow'.

Definitely not something to take more often than once a week, in my view. The next time I try it, I may take it in the morning so I have a chance to enjoy the effects all day.
