Fast forward roughly a week, the Skullcap arrived, along with a few other herbs. It smelled strange and was extremely stemmy, but grindable. That day I smoked nothing and drank no alcohol, and I had a full stomach. My roommate and I sat out on the porch and packed a bowl into his waterpipe. I was excited, but also a little nervous. I didn’t know what to expect. My roommate took a hit and said it felt really strange. After a few deep breaths I took a small hit. The taste was bad but the smell was worse. I instantly felt the Skullcap take effect, although it was very light. I felt “aware” almost, I seemed to be more perceptive of my surroundings. This was all mental however, no visual effects; but I also felt heavy in the body, a very similar feeling to a cannabis body high. My roommate and I took a few more hits but didn’t finish the bowl. After the “high' settled in I felt relaxed and giggly, and my body had a pleasant weight to it. The feeling was still relatively light, comparative to bowl of mid to low quality cannabis. This was at about 8 o clock at night.
About two hours later, a friend had come over and wanted to try skullcap, so we rolled a joint of half skullcap and half Damiana and smoked it between the three of us. We only finished half the joint because it got accidentally ripped halfway through and all the herb was falling out. A number of things happened. First of all, I began to feel very energetic in a positive, wholesome way, which was the biggest difference from the first high I experienced. I had never tried Damiana before but I have heard that energy is one of its effects, plus I didn’t get that feeling the first time I smoked skullcap so I think I can safely attribute that effect to the Damiana. Second, the effect was far stronger than the first time I smoked which was expected, but the strength of the experience was what I would expect of a full joint, not a half joint. The high lasted 30 minutes or so. This time I didn’t notice a change in my perception, but I had a head high that was very different from cannabis, and very strong. I felt very relaxed, happy, and giggly like the first time. Despite the “fuzziness” of the head that accompanies a head high, my mind felt quite clear for how impaired I was. The “high” feeling came from the back of my skull and was a little uncomfortable at first, simply because of how different it felt to anything I had previously experienced. My body felt very heavy while I was simultaneously feeling like I was lighter than I should be. It felt like my body was of great weight but was only lightly touching the earth, as if I were attached to a bunch of helium balloons. This feeling was very enjoyable, and my friends and I had quite a good time. However, at the end of the high I felt something very strange. My roommates reported similar feelings. Any body part that I focused on would start to tingle. It felt like the skin was literally “crawling”. It was a very unpleasant feeling, but fortunately was fairly mild and went away after a few minutes. This was a very off putting part to an otherwise quite enjoyable experience.
Overall, I’m glad I tried Skullcap, it was a journey of self-discovery and has brought me a better understanding of how complex the human brain is and how amazing nature can be. That being said, I don’t plan on smoking any again anytime soon, although I will keep what I already have for a rainy day. The tingling of the skin and the head high were both somewhat uncomfortable to me, and I personally couldn’t imagine using it on a regular basis. It smells terrible and if smoked inside, the smell lingers for days. Other than that, it was a worthwhile experience for me.
