DOSE:
500 mg oral DXM (liquid)
100 mg oral DXM (pill / tablet)
BODY WEIGHT: 150 lb
It was approximately 7:00PM when I received a Kik message from a friend that she had tripped on something from her cabinets. She reported stories of seeing animals and people that didn't exist. It was later that I found out she was referring to diphenhydramine. After a bit of research, I discovered DXM. Little did I know, this legal, yet powerful substance would induce an elated experience which I believe most would find difficult to depict in the human vernacular. Searching through my medicine cabinet, I came to discover I had a DXM-containing only bottle of Delsym. It then scrounged some allergy pills which contained both DXM and another active ingredient, guaifenesin. If I recall correctly, the pills contained 20mg DXM for every 400mg of guaifenesin. After further research, I concluded that crushing five of the pills would not induce vomiting, so I proceeded to pour the cough syrup into a glass as well as the pills. The pills were so ineffably horrendous in taste, I had to dilute the concoction with several glasses of soda. I then invited my friend to come over and act as a trip-sitter.

If I remember correctly, it took me so long to drink the concoction that the initial dissociative effects began taking effect prior to me finishing the entirety of it. The first thing I noticed was that I couldn't help but smile. The tiles of my kitchen floor seemed larger than they typically would. I remember nothing until my friend arrived at my house. At this point, my eyelids couldn't have been further apart from each other. My mouth was wide open and I didn't realize it. My pupils were much dilated. I looked like the definition of a crackhead. I stared at my friend merely sitting a few feet away with this appearance. She couldn't look at me as I almost looked creepy. I don't remember the contents of the conversation, but we had, what seemed to me, a very profound and meaningful one. I recall religion primarily being the subject matter. It was merely after standing up that I realized how inebriated I actually was. It was very difficult to stand in one place. I laughed at how fucked up this legal substance had gotten me.

At some point, I ended up in the bathroom. I don't remember the duration of time I spent in there, but it had to be a while. It's a possibility that I mindlessly stared at myself in the mirror for several hours. It might've been 12:00PM. My mother eventually came in, concerned. She asked me what I took and I replied, 'Well, I know how you didn't like me smoking weed, so I did DXM!' I concluded that sentence in a very, very cheery voice, like being on DXM was far better for me than cannabis. 'DXM? What is that?' She questioned. 'I don't know all of the new drugs you guys are doing these days….' While laughing, I told her how the bathroom lights were tracing and I was seeing trails from them. 'Wow…trippy,' she responded. After thinking about the tracers, I started to think that I was, in actuality, not on DXM but on LSD. The euphoria was profound; I couldn't stop smiling and laughing. It was phenomenal. I then experienced something with my mom that is difficult to describe. For lack of a better word, awkward. I believe I said something that induced an awkwardness that was either greatly exacerbated by the substance resulting in it feeling like an awkward situation or whatever I said was far out. My mom's face was shocked and infatuated, and the DXM seemed to greatly intensify her facial expression resulting in an even more ineffable awkwardness. It got so awkward that we just stared at each other. Then, it was silent for a few seconds. During those few seconds, I felt as if something very, very momentous and BIG was about to occur, and then we both burst out laughing. I was relieved that she laughed, as it made the awkwardness subside. However, her laugh was nervous-sounding. I have only seen this but merely on one other occasion in my life. I'm fortunate to have found this video as the experience was worth remembering. It was in a video of a psychonaut under the influence of the HIV drug known as efavirenz. Here's a link to the video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a5w0Yo26sc8 The phenomena I experienced starts at 10:30 and concludes at 10:42.

It's then that my mom suggests that I come to my room and lay down, so that's what I do. Standing in my doorway which is also the locus of the light switch, she turns off the light. This is when the trip really commenced. When you're not fucked up out of your mind, with no other light source in the room, and someone turns of the light, the entire room is darkened simultaneously. My bed is located in the opposite corner of the room from the doorway/light switch. When she turned off the light, the room was still lit up but there was a 'blanket' of pitch-black darkness that formed from the ceiling to the floor where the light switch was located. The blanket of darkness then got larger, moving towards me. Maybe it was as result of the macropsia, but it seemed like the darkness took a decent span of time to actually climb up to my bed and 'hit' me. When it hit me, I fell back and was astounded by the kaleidoscopic, phantasmagorical visuals I was seeing. Everything had a light blue tint to it. I saw hundreds of triangles being turned by four gears. These gears were replicates of the kind you'd see in a clock or watch. I then proceeded to float out of my body and to the right, in the middle of my room. My mom recalls me saying that I claimed to be on TV. I don't remember if I looked down and saw myself laying on my bed, but it's very possible. To this day, the thought of having seen myself in something other than a reflection is mind-blowing.

I then look at my wall which, at the time, had a rectangular, entirely-black frame on it. A black, swirling entity then formed out of the top of the frame. It floated a few inches from the wall, swirling from the right side of the picture frame to the bottom.

What occurred next is what I deem to be utter dissociation and the peak of the experience. I watched my bedroom door, ceiling, and walls all appear extremely distant from where I was laying. However, my dresser appeared to be a normal distance from me, like it would be if I hadn't taken the DXM. I lost touch with my bed and thought I was laying on the floor of my room, implying that I had no bed. I thought the bed was the floor. All of a sudden, I get this sensation that I'm an ant (yes, the insect) in the far back corner of my room. I believe that my mind was attempting to justify why everything looked so distant from me. For whatever reason, my mind told me that, in addition to being an ant, I was in a dark green army tipi.

I then entertained myself until falling asleep with the very long tracers of light emanated from my device. These tracers stayed so long that I could practically write names without them disappearing. At some point, my hand touched the hair on my leg and it practically felt like magic.

In conclusion, although dextromethorphan is not intrinsically safe and might be deemed 'child's play' by some as result of it being found in various, easily-accessible over-the-counter products, entheogenic, and conscious-expanding experiences are more than possible.
