I had read experiences of Witch pepper intoxication with fascination and wonder, but also frustration. Most reports I've read end in disaster, the people eat too much in environments that aren’t conducive to psychic experiments. So in the name of caution, in the spirit of science, I undertook a series of experiments to test the baseline dose of this mind-boggling plant. But be advised, these plants are highly variable. What I experience may not be typical.
Experiments conducted on three consecutive nights using one freshly-picked prickled pepper. Pepper was growing in poor soil; it was picked October 5th, Latitude: 41 degrees north, in a year when Autumn came a little early. The pepper was still green, and the seeds were wrinkled and juicy. The flowers were white and purple, still in bloom. The biggest plants were about waist-high.
Night One: 8 pepper seeds
I had just found the peppers on my walk home, and when I got home I was locked out. So I cut open my new find and started nibbling (I knew someone would come home eventually). I sat outside and started a fire. About 30 minutes, maybe an hour later I felt an odd feeling of warmth and contentment pass over me. And that’s it: a tinge of sleepiness, but without the heavy eyelids. The feeling of drifting off without actually drifting off. It felt nice.
Night Two: 20 seeds
(I was frustrated with myself for more than doubling my dose. I had wanted to go about this step-wise) At this dose, the dry-mouth became noticeable. Outside, I think I heard phantom noises (they could’ve been real, but after I realized they might be hallucinations, they died away…coincidence, or phantom noises). I spoiled my experiment by smoking a little weed, but regardless—this is definitely an active dose.
Night Three: 11 seeds
Back to familiar territory. No dry mouth. No hallucinations. Just warmth and relaxation. I notice this third night that the Witch Pepper is definitely addictive at these low doses. Also, it’s something of an aphrodisiac. It seems to excite the body and quiet the mind, so it’s not exactly good for sleep, but it is a useful tool for meditation! I had the lurking sense, by the third day, that my body hadn’t fully metabolized the previous day’s dose. So I took a break. I didn’t want toxins building up in my system. But ask me if I like this plant? You bet I do!
I personally love this plant, now. I plan to work my way step-wise up to visual hallucinations, and get a rough sketch of the territory. But I’ll need a good sitter before I go too much further. Know. Will. Dare. And Be Safe!
