Blue Lotus Mythos
Blue Lotus flowers (plant material), Blue Lotus flower resin (15x)

While shopping for ethnobotanicals, I kept seeing Blue Lotus flowers and extracts on the sites I use for ethno fun. My curiosity won out as the stuff wasn't expensive and some people said it was quite a unique experience. I was also really into Egyptology at the time, and they venerated the Lotus flower for it's psychoactive properties. It was a green light in my mind, so - ordered an oz. of dried plant material and a gram of 15:1 concentrate resin. I think this entire order came out to about $35 CDN. Even if the Pharoah's were wrong and Lotus flowers were total bunk, it would hardly break the bank even if ended up giving the stuff away or just chucking it if I could find no takers.

When the package arrived I had a few plans for the Lotus, which supposedly gets its effect from its Nuciferine content, which has never been shown to exhibit entheogenic qualities conclusively. Yet for thousands of years people have said otherwise.

Well by god, I would have results or throw this crap away trying. I tried the resin first, its was just a gummy, very bitter chunk of purplish, hardened goo. I cut it in half and just swallowed it with water. I can't say for sure, but there were almost no effects--all except morning sun beams coming in through the windows, they seemed to have a somewhat mystical quality to them like I was in a room in The Temple of Man or something similar. It faded rather quickly, so quickly I could not be sure if it was a placebo or not, since I was never able to repeat this effect.
I could not be sure if it was a placebo or not, since I was never able to repeat this effect.

After a week or so I wanted to try the Blue Lotus extract again, this time during a P. Cubensis trip to see where that odd Ancient Egypt sensation might go while tripping on something else that was more pronounced--but nothing happened. If it did, I was too shroomed to notice. Maybe eating the whole lump of resin at once instead of halving it might have been different, but the second attempt yielded no results.

I next tried the plant material. Just ground up, rolled in a zig zag and smoked like a cigarette. Again, there was an effect, but it would be hard to say my perception had been altered very much. I smoked maybe two dozen of the Lotus joints over the course of a month or two before deciding it wasn't really making the nut. Also, it was beginning to give me a nagging cough that I recognized from my cigarette smoking days, so I soon abandoned the practice of casually smoking Lotus once in awhile. Why keep up something that didn't really do much and feels like Marlboro's in the morning?

Well, one more shot was all I was gonna give Blue Lotus; mixing it with Cannabis.

This did seem to have a synergistic effect, but it was really more of an excentuation of the Cannabis than a recreation of the initial weirdness I got from the eating of the 15x resin that first time. This also gave me a persistent cough whereas marijuana alone generally doesn't. It didn't seem worth the clogginess in my lungs

for so minimal a punch-up to Cannabis, which doesn't need any help really.

I still had a big bag of flower material remaining, but decided I had no use for it and did what I planned to do if the stuff was busto--give it away. I handed it off to a friend both as a means of getting rid of it and to see if he got anything from Blue Lotus smoking. He said it made him a bit sleepy and that was all.

So, in all--but for one brief experience--Blue Lotus seems like a miss in the ethnobotanical end of things.
