A few weeks ago I was looking up things to get for my Persian cat and I stumbled across Nepeta cataria, more commonly known as catnip. I wondered if its main chemical constituent, nepetalactone, had any effects on humans, so I decided to do some research and some websites said it didn't have any, others that it had some medicinal properties and finally some anecdotal reports of it having some recreational capabilities. I bought 2 tubes, each labeled as having 25 ml of organic catnip (the equivalent to 25 grams). Its content was dried leaves which were already grinded.

My feline friend had previously played around with valerian root, and catnip's effects on him were similar when I gave him some to smell. As for me, I decided to roll it on a spliff alongside tobacco, due to the habit I already have of mixing it with cannabis (mainly Moroccan hashish), and also to give it a smoother and even burn.

At the time of this report, besides the aforementioned substance, I have tried various benzodiazepines, codeine, tramadol, zolpidem and synthetic cannabinoids. On the day I tried catnip, I had not consumed any psychoactive substance besides caffeine and nicotine.

For this experience, I was at home and wrote down on paper timestamps and what was happening at the time to more accurately describe the experience.

--- THE EXPERIENCE ---

19:30 - started smoking the first catnip + tobacco spliff. It had 25% of one of the tubes and half a cigarette, rolled in a king-sized paper, on a mostly empty stomach.

19:35 - finished smoking it. Didn't have the need to cough, unlike what happened in many of the reports I read on forums (although I assumed that's because other people were using pipes to smoke). It burned smoothly, and there were some hints of its taste, which was very mildly minty

19:42 - was sitting in my room, feeling some slight relaxation, unsure if it was just placebo

19:52 - my eyes felt a bit heavy; not as strong as one might get on cannabis, so I was unsure if it was due to the catnip itself

20:06 - felt completely sober; ate dinner

21:49 - rolled a second joint and smoked it. This one had the same amount of tobacco (half a cigarette), but this time I took about 50% of the other catnip tube. Its taste was stronger, which personally wasn't very pleasing, and it burned worse, forcing me to use the lighter multiple times, although fortunately I still didn't cough

22:00 - again unsure if this slight relaxation is placebo or the catnip actually having any effect on me. If any, it's just too subtle to justify continuing its use

22:34 - still not significant effects at this point, was sure I was completely sober and my eyes weren't slightly heavy any more

In conclusion, personally, there's not much recreational value for catnip. Maybe there's some in higher doses, or consumed in a tea or alongside other substances, but as for me, I'll simply leave it for my cat and roll a different plant. :)
