I’ll never forget my first experience with Nitrous. I was 10 years old. It turns out I had a cavity that needed filling, and would require a trip (no pun intended) to my dentist.

I was taken to the back of the office by a friendly nurse who directed me to the dental chair, and I lied down, fearing the unknown. I let her know that I was nervous, so she pulled up a flexible white tube and placed it onto my nose, telling me to breath normally. She said I might feel a bit floaty; what an understatement.
She said I might feel a bit floaty; what an understatement.

Within the first few breaths, I noticed that I had difficulty feeling my hands and feet. I began to feel especially lightheaded and rather giggly as my body relaxed. The next thing to go was my ability to focus. I was unable to conjugate speech, and this made me laugh even harder. By this time, I was totally gone. I felt as though my body was hovering above the chair, and remember thinking that the dentist performing the procedure was some sort of kindly old spirit, which made me feel even more relaxed.

The final, and by far most intense feeling I had, was one where I felt 110% disconnected from the physical world. There’s just no other way to describe it. It’s as if I had been put in temporal stasis, a “bubble” of absolute zero. About that time the voices became clearer, my vision returned, and my body became “whole” again; my dentist had removed the mask.

I now feel that Nitrous Oxide, when properly administered, is a wonderful tool for self-insight, and serious meditation.
