Nitrous/Ketamine Out of Body Disco Freakout

I was up in the mountains at one of the ubiquitous summer musical festivals that occur throughout America, having a generally enjoyable time when I was struck with a pair of freakish out of body experiences triggered by nitrous. I am no newbie to nitrous, having used it hundreds of times while on many different substances, but this time was something absolutely new for me. That evening I had ingested three gelcaps of 'mali,' or MDMA over the period of four hours, taken one hit of acid (blotter), and smoked a marijuana and opium mix several times, however the most significant drug to this story that was in my system was Ketamine.

Ten minutes prior to the first nitrous intake I insufflated roughly 60mg of special K in my tent. I then relocated to a big camping chair just outside, in which I sunk down to enjoy this potent drug. A guy soon showed up, loaded with at least eight ballons. Everyone grabbed one, except me, since I was too out of it and had no motivation to get up and buy one, so one of my friends got it and put it in my hands. The balloon was huge, and took me maybe five breaths to get it all.

I dont remember finishing the balloon. I felt like I was being flung off a merry-go-round and then flipping around a dozen times in the air before everything suddenly froze in front of me. The scene directly ahead of me before and after the nitrous was of about six people clustered together getting high. After taking this balloon all I could see was this one girl staring directly at me, repeating the same phrase over and over again. The girl was on a purplish backround, with a blue floor. There was discoish music playing, perhaps bleeding in from the concert in the distance.

I couldn't look away, move or do anything. I had no body, and I remember thinking, this is it, this is eternity, back on earth everyone is just going to stare at my lifeless body, as it is carted around and my mind stays trapped in this disco hell. I had forgotten how I had gotten there and that I had taken nitrous, increasing my terror. This state lasted subjectively the same time I can hold my breath underwater. It then faded and reality sprung back.

Three hours later I tried nitrous again after a heavy dose of Ketamine. This time I was sitting in one of those tents of which the walls are all bug netting that you can see through. Three other people were in there with me, two of whom also took nitrous. Once again the balloon was huge. I experienced the same initial feeling of being hurled out of my body but this time another guy was left looping in front of me saying the same thing. The disco feeling was back. The upper half of the nitrous disco room was silver and the floor was wood. I was not so terrified the second time since I knew reality would come back. I tried to move around to look someplace else but once again had no luck. I realized I was receiving no sensations from my body, and was indeed temporarily without it. It felt like a terribly long time before the scene changed at all, and the reversion to normalcy was much more dramatic. I could finally see the other two people in the tent, but they just entered the nitrous world which had remained. The tent walls next defined themselves but were silver instead of transparent. I grabbed onto the girl next to me as soon as I was able to move and then quickly the walls cleared up and I could see all the tents and other objects around us. During both experiences everyone around me reported that my body was perfectly still despite my trying to thrash about while at the disco.

The feeling of being mentally trapped in another world was disturbing. Losing the freedom of physical movement and visual progression was unpleasant, but the fear that it would not return was terrible. Out of Body Experiences tend to be glamorized as a way to meet God, Aliens or Elvis, but in fact can be psychically encapsulating zones that limit the mind instead of expand it. In these two experiences my ego came back before any other senses and it showed itself to be existing apart from the body. I realized that this potential for the ego to exist separately suggests the possibility of existences apart from the corporeal world of the body, but also demonstrated to me that the ego requires a body to interact with our world and those within it. My fear came from being unable to let go of this world as I am not done with life and could not bear to leave. All in all I am glad to be back and that the mind body connection will stay intact for one more day.
