In Eastern Europe, where I grew up, Valerian was commonly given as a sedative or anti-anxiety agent. It was prepared by boiling the dried root in water and drinking the pungent (very earthy & herbal, not terribly pleasent) valarian tea.

Living in the United States, I now take it in capsules (1000-1500mg), or in herbal tea (Sleepy Time Extra has valerian, though not the regular Sleepy Time). As a sedative it's very effective. It promotes a restful night of sleep without much groggy feeling the next day. It's not habit forming. I should mention that as a recreational drug it's completely useless - valerian is good for calming me down or helping me sleep, it has no fun effects. It can be useful the day after taking MDMA to help me get to sleep.
