I have taken Concerta on several occasions to help me when studying and taking exams, however, the come-down is terrible for me. I am normally a very emotionally stable individual and my mood is rarely different from one day to the next. Despite this, although I believe methylphenidate does help me concentrate, it makes me generally unsociable and irritable, even with people I am close with. I also experience a great deal of negative thoughts and depression especially during come-down and even slightly afterward. In addition, physical side-effects include: headache, muscle cramps, fatigue and a lack of desire to eat (even while hungry). The effects I experience are probably due to the relatively high dosage and no tolerance to the substance (as it is taken on-demand), so a lower dosage may be more pleasurable. In comparison to ephedrine, methylphenidate is harsh: ephedrine seems to be a much smoother drug with few negative effects on me, with mostly the same positive effects. Caffeine does not compare: I feel it should be used to stay awake and nothing else.
