This experience I am going to write about was my first ever time using drugs intravenously.

The date was September 5th. I’d just started another year of school a couple days earlier, and wasn’t looking forward to the commitment that was ahead. Total drudgery in my opinion. Anyhow, I wasn’t feeling optimistic, and decided to go downtown.

Once I had arrived downtown, I ran into an old friend of mine. We’ll call him West. I’ve known West for years, and I even knew him before he was a junkie. He’s now dependant on opiates, but he’s never done heroin. So I run into West, and we decide we’ll pool our resources and get a pill.

We do the obligatory mission, walking down to the homeless shelter, asking quietly if anyone’s “Got any down?” It takes a while, but we get a ½ full 100mg capsule of morphine. 50mg of the good stuff.

We find a hotel and sneak inside through the lobby. We both duck into the men’s washroom and into a stall. Once we’re in, the fun begins!

West opens up his bag of tricks, pulls out sterile needles, a cooker, alcohol swabs, a tourniquet, cottons and all. I had never done drugs intravenously before, and it seems that most people are of the opinion that sticking a needle into your body is a huge threshold to cross. I decided to cross it that night.
In retrospect, I wish I would have watched West prepare the solution more carefully the first time, which would have made my uses after that much simpler.

We decide to dissolve the whole amount and split it more or less equally between us. West prepares my needle first.
He instructs me to tie off with the tourniquet. They are government supplied, basically large ribbons of rubbery elastic. So I wrap the tourniquet very tightly around my upper arm, and squeeze my fist to make the veins appear.

West is professional, and gets the needle in my vein on the first try.
I didn’t even feel it, really. What still fascinates and enchants me is watching the blood spiral into the barrel of the syringe…
And then before you know it, it disappears back into your veins.
And then it’s done.

I undid the tourniquet from my arm. Several seconds passed and I didn’t feel anything.
Then, like a 16 wheeler, it hit me.
I felt this incredible all-over ache. It is the most intense feeling of warm aches all over my body, in every muscle. It felt amazing! Almost like a full-body orgasm or something akin to it. As the warm ache starts to fade away, a very different sensations starts to creep over my body.
It is like the prickliest pins and needles sensation. It started at the top of my head and moved slowly down my body until it left through my toes. Really, it felt like pins and needles but hot and slightly itchy. A fascinating sensation.
After those two rushes, I began to settle into delightful inebriation.

We caught a ride to wherever. I remember sitting in the back seat, feeling the cushions hugging my body so nicely. Smoking a cigarette, passively listening to whatever was on the radio, and enjoying the buzz and the blur of morphine.

On the bus ride home, I experienced the magic that users refer to as “nodding off”. An absolute lack of control over my level of consciousness. I could feel my eyelids getting heavy, feel them closing, but not be able to open them. I couldn’t resist the nods at all. When I get into a nod, it will sometimes take me a couple seconds or minutes to realize I’m nodding and to wake myself up. It’s just pitch-black quietness, like a micro-sleep. Beautiful and comfortable. It doesn’t matter if I'm sitting down, standing up, lying down, the nods can and will happen. Personally, I enjoy them. I realize it must look funny to anyone who’s watching me bob in and out of consciousness, but when I'm nodding I don’t even care about it.

Eventually I make it home, staggering down my street towards my door, just trying to keep my eyes open.
In the door, shoes off, run upstairs and throw up. This is something I have noticed about morphine: It always makes me throw up. Not just once, and not just when I’m high. On a day that I use, I probably won’t be able to keep any food down at all.
Once I’m done throwing up, I toss myself into bed and sleep an angel’s sleep.

Even woke up feeling rested and in time for school.

That was my first ever intravenous drug experience.

The author estimates they received between 25 and 35 milligrams during the experience.
