My friend and I were in Peru, following a university field trip, and were doing some travelling. At the time we were on our way to Manu National Park, from Cusco (which is 3,800m above sea level). It was a 7 hour journey through the mountains, and at one point we were close to 5,000m above sea level.

Needless to say, we were feeling a bit strange and lightheaded, and a number of joints that had been smoked on the way there may not have helped with this. We had a lunch of soup, and a mug each of fresh Coca tea. This really seemed to sort us both out, the slightly strange, and slightly strange, lightheaded feeling was reduced. Peruvians swear by it.
