I had done some research regarding IV codeine use. It is an accepted form of administration although still not widely practiced in the American medical field. I verified that I would have ample time off of work to alleviate fears of a urine screen. I decided that since no one had posted an IV experience, that I could find, I would go for it. Normally, codeine is given IM in its liquid form. I happen to have access to such in the form of Codeine Phosphate.

I used a 23gauge needle and found a suitable vessel in my right antecubital area. I am normally right handed but I have much experience with needles in my profession so I felt confident that I would not blow my vein. I managed to do well injecting with my left hand. I could feel warmth in my legs before I undid the tourniquet. Once I released the tourniquet with my teeth, I thought I was going to have an allergic reaction. I was feeling intense warmth across my entire body. I looked at my arms and they were red. I ran to my bathroom and looked in the mirror. It looked like I had taken a huge dose of Niacin and felt about the same at that point. About then I remembered that the literature said to push slowly over 2 mins. That explained that. Still 3 min in I chugged a double shot of espresso to quell my fears of knocking out my respiratory drive.

I disposed of my needle and other garbage. Being sure to place it all in someone else’s garbage. Then came back in the house and plopped down on the couch to see what happened.

I have experience using IM Dilaudid. I am very comfortable with IV morphine so I was excited to see how I would feel with IV Codeine.

T+13min—Grabbed a beer…not very impressed at this point.

T+20min---Nice mellow buzz. Between the Beer and the nice opiate high, I am feeling some pleasant feelings. I did notice that I had a small hematoma at the insertion site. Probably because I freaked when I got flush and hot all over. Mmmm,…this is pretty nice.

T+30min--- Still truckin’. All is well. The beer and the codeine are definitely the way to go. You get a nice synergistic effect.

T+1hr--- Pretty much spent. Maybe it’s because I did dilaudid and morphine about a week ago. I always seemed to have a tolerance for these things. Definitely not better than IV Dilaudid. That’s the stuff there.

T+1hr 20min--- Definitely no high like IV Dilaudid, although, no nausea either. I am starting to get the itches though.

T+1hr 25min--- No more itching, might have been a fluke.

T+2hr--- Nothing going on now. The high is gone. Maybe IM would be better as one would get a slow release of drug over a longer time.
