I think I first heard about chloral hydrate in context with the death of Marilyn Monroe and Anna Nicole Smith's death. I always planed to synthesize it because it seems like a pretty simple process and the precursors are not hard to get (bleach, alcohol etc) and also I thought it's pretty safe to use, because it's used as a sedative/hypnotic for children . After thinking about this some more I realised that getting equipment for this might not be so cheap so I gave up.

Two years later I was in an organic chemistry class and we had to use chloral hydrate to prepare acetanylide. So there was this huge box of reagent grade chloral hydrate, with purity close to 100%.. I wasnt sure it was safe to ingest but this was my only chance to get this stuff so I weighed about 27 grams and took it home with me (now I feel I should have taken more). I then mixed this in 1 L water to get a 27 mg/ml solution. The taste was a tiny bit caustic but I used 3 spoons (about 40 ml) in a glass of water so the taste was hardly noticeable.

The things I like about it are that it kicks in pretty fast, in about 5-10 minutes, regardless of what I eat before. The feeling is also very clean compared to benzodiazepins..there's no dizziness and ataxia I might get from benzos. Once it kicks in it feels a bit like being slighly drunk but without fogging the mind and once I get in a bed I sleep really good for 2-3 hours. I wake up with no grogginess, there isn't any hangover to speak of.

The major disadvantages are that it's somewhat toxic, possibly carcinogenic and I read somewhere it rarely causes leukopenia and eosinophilia.
