I have long been an enthusiastic psychonaut willing to experiment with many substances, with a few exceptions (inhalants other that nitrous, PCP.) For years I had heard of the reputed psychedelic aspects induced by remaining awake under the influence of zolpidem, but never managed to secure any ambien until recently. Well, my experiences don't quite match up to most of what I have read or heard. One thing I am sure of though is this little sleeping pill really blew me and my expectations clear out of the water. Here are some of my general observations of this interesting sleep aid that has become one of my favorite substances to date.

First off, I would like to say that I have yet to actually 'hallucinate' on zolpidem, which is disappointing, but my vision is certainly affected. Shadows shift by themselves, my eyes seem to have trouble keeping up with flickering lights from candles, and when I watch movies under its influence, every character seems to grow two heads, or have a 'ghost/holographic' head behind them. This is clearly double vision, but it really only occurs when watching TV or staring at things for a time. The closest thing to a hallucination I have experienced on zolpidem occurred immediately after smoking marijuana and looking at the spinning blades of my ceiling fan in my dark room. The blades turned into cartoonish looking furry spider legs, which was a bit scary, but I was easily able to wish them away and the fan returned to normal. The movie collection I own is pretty limited, but watching films under the influence of ambien is like seeing them for the first time all over again, but even better. I have found so many things to laugh at that my sober mind missed before, in such lackluster films like 'Nacho Libre.'

Secondly, it has been my understanding that ambien is not a party drug, or at least not a wise one to use becomes it can cause unpredictable behavior. This has not been my experience at all. I would prefer taking ambien in a social setting over drinking alcohol any day, provided I have good friends around to make sure I don't do anything stupid. My thought pattern becomes loose, and I become very sociable and relaxed, yet quite subdued at polite. My coordination is certainly impaired by all this though, but at a party full of drunks and stoners this doesn't draw much attention.

The euphoria I experience from zolpidem once the initial onset wears off is simply incredible. Nothing really compares to it. Certainly there are better euphoria producing substances out there, but zolpidem is quite unique. However, with each use, I believe some of the magic is starting to wear off, even if I take a break from use for a week or two.

I find that music has a bit more depth and puts me in a more ponderous mood than normal, but not dramatically much so more than normal. But in conjunction with marijuana, music almost seems to take on a 3D quality to it. For me marijuana is very enjoyable to combine with ambien, and a little goes a very long way. The same goes for smoking spice product. Of course, the confusion and disorientation increases immediately after smoking it as well. I have never consumed alcohol while on ambien. Cigarettes, which I rarely indulge in, are incredible on ambien and prolong and intensify my euphoria exponentially.

I rarely ever have trouble getting to sleep with or without a sleep aid, but I do have to get up around 3 AM every morning to go to the bathroom. Sometimes I have to relieve myself more than twice in a night. This is very frustrating for me and my family. With ambien, I wake up EXACTLY at 8 AM, and have to piss like a race horse. I feel like a million bucks in the morning too, provided I get a full night sleep. I have noticed my mood and energy the morning after taking it is through the roof. I have never had a hangover from zolpidem; well, now that I think about it, there is a hangover, but its more like a wonderful afterglow that I look forward to waking up to. I have also experienced some incredibly complex dreams, some of which where I was able to solve real life problems I was experiencing at the time.

I usually have taken zolpidem at night after a long day so I can watch movies, smoke some bud, and then hit the sack. I have taken it during the day and it is still enjoyable, but not nearly as much so as at night. I think this is because I am on the move during the day, and can't really allow the euphoria to fully set in. When combined with yerba mate, it causes me to experience a pleasurable rushing sensation in my limbs for about fifteen minutes after finishing the beverage. This only seems to happen to me with yerba mate though, and not with coffee or soda. (Are the chemicals in yerba mate a potential zolpidem potentiator perhaps?)

Overall, zolpidem has completely shattered my expectations. It is now one of my favorite substances, but I recognize its inherent dangers. It should be noted that the pills I have are of a rather high dose of 12.5 mgs, which is about 4 times what most people use. I have taken up to 3 of these super pills, but taking more than 2 is really just a waste. I feel zolpidem has a fairly big addiction/dependency potential and should not be used for prolonged periods of time. I wanted even use it more than 4 days in a row, for recreational purposes or for the treatment of insomnia. I have only a few left and plan to take a break for at least a month. I hope I can wait that long...

I haven't had any real bad episodes, but I have noticed I had placed random things in weird places around my room during the course of a few zolpidem 'trips.' Be careful out there and have fun. Zolpidem use is risky, but I have to give two thumbs up.
