I have been on some sort of opioid for 10 years. In the past 2 years, I have only been taking Suboxone. I've managed to ween myself down to .5 mg (1/16th of a 8 mg film) per day. So, I decided to try to quit taking Suboxone altogether.

Knowing that I was about to experience hell, I decided to try using kratom to relieve the withdrawal symptoms. I got used to feeling the onset of withdrawal around the time that I'd be due to take my dose. So, already feeling the withdrawal symptoms, I took my .5 mg dose then decided to go get some kratom from a local head shop. Well, being the addict that I am, I made the mistake of deciding to take the kratom as soon as I got it. So I weighed out 10 grams, and drank it in a tea.

By the time I had finished that nasty tea, I started feeling a mild alcohol like buzz that immediately gave way to a pounding headache and severe nausea similar to the ill feeling I get when I partake in the consumption of alcohol while on Suboxone (probably also similar to the effect I get from using other opioids while on Suboxone). I lied down, but couldn't sleep. The ill feeling subsided after 2 hours or so, and I began to feel normal.

Now, on a positive note...

I went the next 36 hours, free from Suboxone, and didn't experience any withdrawal, which is amazing. After 36 hours, I started having back pains. So, I weighed out 5 grams of kratom, and made another tea. The 5 gram tea wasn't nearly as nasty as the 10 gram tea, but it was still quite bitter. Within minutes, my back still hurt although the pain was less intense, but I never mentally craved Suboxone. Even though I still had a small supply of it left, I decided to hold off and save it in case of a future incident that may cause severe pain.

I will continue to drink kratom tea as needed, but I plan on stretching the doses out as long as I can stand. The last thing I want is to become addicted to another drug like I did when I switched from methadone to Suboxone, or from heroin to methadone.

So basically, taking kratom while on Suboxone is a horrible idea. The 2 drugs in Suboxone (naloxone and buprenorphine) completely fill your opioid receptors, so when you attempt to fill them with something else, they basically have a war over occupation. I knew this, but wasn't sure if kratom would have the same effect, since it isn't actually an opioid.

Kratom is definitely an excellent, natural treatment for the mental and physical symptoms of mild opioid withdrawal. After weening down to smallest amount possible, it does help with the final stage of kicking the habit.

Before I tried this, I searched for experiences using these drugs together, but couldn't find anything. So, I hope this helps prevent others from making the same mistake.
