I had purchased a beautiful 4-ft tall brugmansia at a local nursery, being somewhat aware of its psychotropic uses, and planning on experimenting with it at some point. I was hesitant to do so at first, having read that brugmansia trips have a tendancy to be unpleasant. But I loved the plant, which soon blossomed with gorgeous trumpet-shaped flowers, and one night after a few beers I decided that I'd try eating one leaf, about the size of my hand.
one night after a few beers I decided that I'd try eating one leaf, about the size of my hand.
Here are my three major mistakes that ended up leading to tragedy: spontaneously deciding to try a new hallucinagen while under the influence of alcohol, being completely unprepared, and not informing my roommate (who was sleeping at the time) of what I was doing. I waited about an hour after eating the leaf, continuing to drink beer in my bedroom, while reading up on brugmansia on the internet. Nothing happened during this time, other than the usual buzz from the alcohol, and I concluded that if I'd felt no effects after an hour, than I likely would get nothing from the experience.
This was when I started hearing music coming from the living room, which was odd because it was around midnight and my roommate was still asleep. It sounded like a woman or many women singing. I wandered out of my room, feeling like I was floating very slowly towards the source of the music; my brugmansia plant. Somehow I was encouraged by the singing to consume more of the plant; my last conscious memory of the experience was dancing underneath the plant (somehow, even though it was over a foot shorter than me) and nibbling at the flowers, while the music grew louder and more encouraging. I felt like I was flitting around the plant like a hummingbird or butterfly, sipping nectar and dancing ecstatically. I have no idea how much more plant material I consumed.
I woke up around 6pm the next evening with a pounding headache, and noticed that my room had been trashed; furniture overturned, books tossed from the shelves, a lamp knocked over. I immediately realized that something had gone horribly wrong. This feeling was confirmed when I stumbled into the kitchen, wearing completely different clothes than I'd been wearing the night before, and was confronted by my extremely irritated roommate. He told me how he'd gotten up for school early that morning to find the bathtub overflowing, and the toilet clogged up with the jeans I had been wearing. He then found me in the living room, minus my pants, speaking in some strange made up language. I was too embarrased to ask him about any other details after he told me that he had to guide me back to my room and help me into another pair of pants, after which he dealt with the mess I'd made in the bathroom. My very awesome roommate, who thankfully didn't kick me out and eventually forgave me, said that I didn't appear to be drunk, but was 'in another place.' I don't remember any part of the experience after dancing under the brugmansia tree.
After proving that brugmansia often results in a bad trip, I do not recommend trying this plant, even if you intend on starting with a small amount, as there's no way of knowing what will happen once you're under the influence.
