I begin by refraining from caffeine, especially coffee, at least eight hours before bed. Marijuana, as a rule, typically but not always, will completely free my nights of ASP. It is also a good tool for falling asleep quickly when I must wake up at a certain hour and get a good night's rest. To ensure a good night's rest I will also add 50-75 mg of Diphenhydramine. I have never experienced ASP with this combination or even with diphenhydramine alone. Sometimes I will experience a 'brain fog' for the first hour or two of my morning, but nothing unpleasant.
The only thing I don't like is that Diphenhydramine is know to withhold certain parts of the REM sleep cycle. Personally, I really enjoy dreaming and lucid dreams in particular. I will often add 3 Mg Melatonin/25 mg Theanine to increase the length of REM and increase my dream recall. These three drugs in combination, accompanied by a before-bed shower leave me will a wonderful peaceful night's sleep. I hope this will help.
