I read like a pharmacologist's dream or nightmare. Asperger's w/ADHD co-morbid. As you might expect, Social Anxiety is inherent and I've got a bit of childhood onset PTSD that has and hopefully never will again pitch me into such states of PANIC that have at times felt like Out-of-Body experiences while being wide awake, behind the wheel of a car with 40 miles to drive on I-5.

Here's the truth from my perspective and experience and you can take it or leave it. Anyone who is on the spectrum, has any form of Attention Deficit and parents or guardians need to pay close attention, here.

Dexedrine has gotten a bad rap.

I was first given Ritalin, single dose. Worked for about 6 weeks. It had a bizarre effect on me: I cried quite a lot. This was not typical of me. Doctor switched me to Adderall single-dose at what is thought to be a conservative dose: one 20 mg tab 'as needed.' I broke the tablets in half, typically taking a 5 milligram quarter at 4 or 5 PM, if it looked like another late night of software testing and maintaining my equilibrium with sometimes thoroughly idiotic co-workers. Thoughtus Interruptus, constantly. And I still had to drive home through late night/early AM Silicon Valley.

Adderall felt kind of mean (to me) from the first time, yet I took the stuff for several years. I remember asking my Dr 'is there an issue with prescribing Dexedrine, since it seems SAFER?' I was told, in essence 'I'd rather not go there' and 'It won't be helpful to you.'

Allow me to explain what I've learned about those words 'It won't be helpful.' The truth is, post-Ritalin and/or Adderall, I cannot feel the EFFECTS of Dexedrine. I did the research and so knew pretty much what to expect.

For an interval of 4 to 5 months, two 10 mg Dexedrine Spansules taken 5 - 6 hours apart seemed to do nothing. I'd known this was a physical impossibility and a probable result, so PRIOR to switching from Adderall to Dexedrine, I vacationed for two weeks. During those two weeks, I took Piracetam with Citicholine for ten days, took an organic B-complex vitamin every other day, a C w/D3 every night and recently added one 15 mg Manganese (chelate, organic) to my regimen. My diet was a bit of a shambles, quite often eating processed foods, so I began assiduously reading labels. The Piracetam/CitiCholine regimen had an interesting and unexpected effect: I ceased being an omnivore and became Vegetarian (mostly Vegan, more than a year later).

Manganese and Zinc are important 'players' within the mind of the hyperactive, but all metals must be very carefully managed in those who are 'on the spectrum'. In particular, children should have a full blood workup to determine precise deficiencies and overabundance and these need to be addressed accordingly. Anyone with a compromised liver or is a constant heavy drinker should consult with a Dr prior to ingesting Manganese supplements. Diabetics are cautioned: Manganese tends to regulate blood sugar levels. It is assumed that Americans get sufficient quantities of Manganese, but a diet of processed foods takes a toll. And Pharmaceuticals taken long term can cause interesting imbalances we rarely know a thing about.

I needed to set my Serotonin straight, hence the L-Tryptophan with P5P (this being the co-enzyme B6, with some form of B6 NECESSARY as a catalyst for L-Tryptophan to cross the blood-brain barrier, converting to 5-HTP and Melatonin.** Took one C+D3 before bed. Used an organic full B spectrum vitamin 2 - 3 times per week. I continue this regimen, now. I take 3 - 5 day vacations once per month and reintroduce Piracetam (about 1 Gram) to 500 mgs Citicholine for 1 - 2 days.

** Melatonin does horrible things to my moods. After 1 night, I awake in a morbid depression. I re-tested this twice with precisely the same results. 5 - HTP + B6 works a lot better, but L-Tryptophan w/P5P has proven to be optimal for me.

When Social Anxiety reared its head, I used GABA sublingual 2 - 3 times a day. Not Valium, exactly, but it works pretty well. My diet improved immensely. I kept careful watch on my (natural) sugar intake, avoided artificial sweeteners (Stevia is the answer, here).

The mind can heal from many insults and you can help it along. Dexedrine is POWERFUL stuff. These days, just one 10 mg spansule in the morning is PLENTY. I continue to 'vacation' for short intervals. Although I don't develop drug tolerance very easily, why push my luck? 10 mgs effective is superior to needed two 10 mg spansules daily.

Oh yes, I must be truthful about this: I use cannabis 2 - 3 times per week. 1/2 'cigarette' works quite well. It helps with the autistic 'component' in me. The Indica variety of medical marijuana. Sativa strain is typically cheaper, but tends to be a bit 'edgy' (anxiety potential). I began smoking at age 12 and accomplished quite a lot of success within the world of Neurotypicals. More than I ever dreamed possible.
