DOSE:
1 tsp oral Erythrina mulungu (tea)
BODY WEIGHT: 165 lb
I have a “fast” personality and have always been drawn to substances that slow me down. Most hypnotics either do not work as advertized or have some very bad side effects (addiction, tolerance, unpredictability, nausea, etc.).

When a friend recommended mulungu for my frequent insomnia I thought I’d try it out. I used the dosage she recommended, one heaping teaspoon in a cup of boiling water. I let it steep for 10 minutes and slowly drank the decanted liquid. It was late afternoon. After about 15 minutes I felt slightly drowsy and slowed down with a slight loss of balance. I closed my eyes and drifted off into a kind of trance-like sleep for about 20 minutes. The entire experience was quite pleasant. It took several hours for the sedating effect to completely leave.

I have repeated this procedure for about one month, drinking the mulungu tea about an hour before bedtime. It definitely helps me relax but does not guarantee sleep. Sometimes my active mind will just wait for its effects to dissipate. It seems like a good adjunct to other methods of relaxation. It does make me drowsy and I am careful to take it near bedtime or when I don’t have to do anything requiring alertness or motor control. So far I have not experienced any tolerance and am taking the same dose, one heaping teaspoon in one cup of boiling water.
