I have been on the antipsychotic olanzapine (Zyprexa) for a few months, and my psychiatrist has been upping the dose every month, first from five to ten milligrams and later from ten to twenty milligrams. While I have indeed benefit from the increased dose in terms of reduced psychotic behavior and thinking, there has also been a drawback in the form of akathisia. I explained this to my psychiatrist, and he gave me a script for procyclidine with the instructions that I can take up to three 5 mg tablets as the need arises.

I researched the pharmacology and discovered that procyclidine had anti-muscarinic and anti-nicotinic properties. As an anticholinergic, I hypothesized that there might be potential for some recreational value of this drug. After having used it on a dozen occasions in doses of three 5 tablets, I felt comfortable exploring slightly higher doses.

I took seven 5 mg tablets totalling 35 mg, swallowed with water after not eating for six hours. The effects came on within an hour: dry skin, dry eyes, dry mouth, dry nostrils, everything is dry. Then the actual buzz began. It feels like the feeling you have in your stomach just after coming off an intense roller coaster ride. It's neither pleasant nor unpleasant, but merely there. There has been some brief intermittent nausea, but not enough to make for a negative experience. I must admit that there is some serious color enhancement and tracers. It looks pretty just to stare into a white wall. I feel a bit fatigued, and I feel constantly thirsty. This is definitely not a drug for parties or even socializing. In fact, I am not sure this drug is for anything but taken as prescribed. It's a worse buzz than nutmeg, but then again, I am strange in the sense that I enjoy the nutmeg buzz. This, however, is nothing like it except for the dry eyes, mouth etc.

I smoked hashish mixed with tobacco during the entire experience, and every time I took a hit, I felt slightly nauseous. It made me want to smoke less because of this. Whether that is a good thing is up the the individual to decide.

I put my pill bottle back in the cabinet and concluded that I now will only use procyclidine to reduce the uncomfortable sensations in my legs.
