DOSE:
  oral Morphine (daily)
BODY WEIGHT: 200 lb
[Erowid Note: Because opiate use can lead to significant tolerance (requiring higher doses for the same effects), the dose used by a first time user is significantly smaller than that used by a regular user. It can be extremely dangerous to choose ones dose on the basis of the amount taken by someone else. Overdoses of opiates can be fatal.]
Pain Relief From Morphine

I've been in chronic pain for a total of three years now. I never thought I would ever be in physical condition that I am in now. I was extremely healthy, I was in the US Army for a few years so I was in superb physical condition. I would run anywhere from 2 to 6 miles every single day.

One day on my way home from completing a 6.8 mile run, I was rear ended by a car that was going 101 mph in heavy traffic where the speed limit on this highway was only 55. I remember being struck and my speedometer going from 57 up to 90, also glass from the rear window hitting me and cutting the back of my head when I slammed back into my seat. I spun around three times, somehow I gained control of the vehicle in this terrible spin without rolling it. My mind came to immediately when I seen my car headed towards the pillars of this bridge going over the highway. I somehow managed to park the vehicle on the shoulder with only two working wheels on my vehicle one rim split into two halves and the other folded under the car. I sat there in shock... As my sergeant approached me I said he was going at least 100!!! As I sat there I noticed the blood running down my head, neck, and back. The pain set in finally after I finally found a way out of my vehicle which was folded up like an accordion. I could hardly stand my right leg and lower back hurt so badly.

They said I would feel better within 30 days or so, and I shouldn't need anymore medication. They started me on oxycodone, I had surgery shortly after on my left ankle. Still taking oxycodone for the surgery as well. Months later after finally being taken off medication for surgery I noticed my back felt as terrible as the day it was hurt in the accident. They continued to do multiple things to take care of it, steroids directly into the affected area, etc. I continued to take oxycodone to deal with the pain.

Later after a couple years of use I started getting sick from them so they put me on hydrocodone which did nothing for pain. I would feel the euphoric effects of the medicine, but I'd feel terrible otherwise. By this time I was out of the Army and being taken care of by the VA. I went to ER complaining about severe pain and the hydrocodone was doing nothing. They gave me a muscular injection of morphine about 15 mg, I started to feel better... Way better. I did not get the massive euphoria that I hear people get from morphine when it's injected. The doc came back in and asked if this worked for the pain. I stood up and I could walk normally again. He then gave me morphine sulfate tablets one for breakthrough pain and one that's for extended release. He said these are supposed to last 8 to 12 hours. They were both 15mg tablets. They worked alright... But I was taking the immediate release tablets for breakthrough pain still.

When I went to my doctor they upped the 15mg extended release or (SR) tablets to 30mg. Which seemed to prove more effective for the pain and slightly reduced the amount of the others I took. They might up my dose again to drop the other tablets use some more. One thing I have noticed with these is that I don't feel as high, for as long as I did with the other medicines, but I also feel better as far as the pain goes.

I can actually do more things than I could before minus running and sit ups still. I'm hopefully awaiting surgery as my vertebrae are rubbing together in my low back and crushing my sciatic nerve as well.

I love the fact I feel better physically for now, but I do wish to stop the medication as I've been taking opiates for three years now. I'd have to say hands down morphine has made my life so much better overall, since my injuries. I am not as irritable, I'm pain free or in very little pain more often than I am in pain. One day I hope to be free from the big pharmacies, and drugs altogether. As for now I'm happy and content with how this stuff has made my life better. I do wish to be able to run again and it's one of my biggest dreams I have. I do feel down from the fact it's been three years now, I've been through many many rounds of medications, and also sometimes waiting to finally get ahold of the doctor to get more. I hate to feel like I'm being drugged up slightly as this stuff makes me tired sometimes. I find myself drinking about three times the amount of caffeine than I used too. I can pound a 340mg caffeine rockstar, an entire pot of coffee, and maybe some b vitamins to get myself going and stay awake if I'm doing things that require sitting.

Overall I'd still say morphine is a godsend and people who abuse it to just get high make it so much harder to get for people like me who actually need the medication. It allows me to do simple things like do dishes, wash clothes, or even just go to work. Otherwise, I'd be laying on the couch crying and going into deep depression, because the pain is so severe.
