I am a 26 year old male with a history of chronic pain among other things. Currently I apply BuTrans 5 mcg/hour patches (buprenorphine transdermal system) once a week. I also take Norco 10/325 for breakthrough pain and Gabapentin 900 mg TiD (3X daily). Here is the sequence of events:

T-3 days: BuTrans 5 mcg/h patch applied
T-4 Hours: Norco 10/325, Gabapentin 900 mg PO
T-1 Hour: Citalopram 10 mg PO
T-45 Min Norco 10/325 mg, Gabapentin 400mg PO, Xanax 0.5 mg PO

T=0: I was lying on a bed visiting my father when, while staring at the ceiling I began to notices the texture on the ceiling was *flowing* like a river or ocean current. This fascinated (and momentarily confused) me. It reminded me of taking a moderately strong dose of DXM and staring at the ceiling (same effect). After a minute though, things got really interesting. While the ceiling's fluidity increased some, my *dads* came in to chat. I saw 'dads' because though I only have one dad, there was no denying I saw two before me. Both acting autonomously too.

I started talking to my 'dads' with some awkwardness, then explained what was happening to me. My father is a retired special investigator and law enforcement officer as well as a chronic pain patient, so he is knowledgeable in drug use (meaning he didn't jump my *** assuming I was just high). About this time I should mention the walls began to melt around me. He was concerned though, and we both decided for me to take a large dose of a benzo on the basis that it closely resembled a strong DXM open eye experience, and benzodiazapines are known to abort DXM trips. I took 2 mg Xanax, and whether by coincidence or the Xanax, within 35 minutes I was no longer down the rabbit hole.

This was not an unpleasant experience - in fact had I have sought similar experiences out before. But I don't expect to have these effects from my physician prescribed and required daily meds. What if I was driving and all of a sudden the street became liquid? See how that could turn ugly? The one thing I just con't get (and I have several high level degrees and cross specialties in biochemistry, pharmacology, and other related fields) is why it happened this time. I have been on the exact same regimen, same dose of Gabapentin, equivalent dose of Buprenorphine, and same dose of Xanax. Only difference is the buprenorphine was sublingual. Still, this is a mystery to me to this day...
