Three friends and I decided to take some mushrooms [psilocybe natalensis psilocybe cubensis] on the weekend but since we had all tripped multiple times we wanted to try something new. Our mushroom dealer Rob just happened to have some Sceletium and so along with the 8 grams of his mushroom mix we bought 10 grams of the dried Sceletium root which the Rob had grown and fermented himself.
We too the mushrooms on an empty stomachs and started packing some supplies for our trip in the local botanical gardens. After about half an hour we arrived at the gardens and my one friend T started feeling nauseous. Rob had told us that the Sceletium reduces hunger so we figured it would help with the nausea. I rolled a joint with about a ¼ gram of Sceletium and some tobacco. It burnt really slowly as the Sceletium goes a bit resinous when burnt but it gave the smoke a rum and raisin sort of taste. After about 2 minutes I started to feel an increase in energy and very comfortable at the same time. It helped T’s nausea and we all felt a lot happier. I couldn’t tell if this was the shrooms starting to kick in or the Sceletium.
We wandered through the gardens for about 5 hours climbing trees, splashing around in the river and just laughing. I was filled with a sense of child like wonder and just running around brought about feels of euphoria the likes of which I have never experienced on only 2 grams of shrooms. I felt as if the grass was very pleased that I was sitting on it and that the trees got more and more excited for me the higher I climbed. Every time we found ourselves zoning out for too long we would smoke some Sceletium with either tobacco, pot or both.

Although the Sceletium and mushrooms had diminished our appetites after about 8 hours of running around the gardens and freaking out the some of the other garden visitors we needed some fuel. The mushroom energy had all but worn off and the constant smoking of Sceletium was the only thing that kept us going on the walk back to Geoff’s house.
When we arrived we were finished and all that we could get from his very empty kitchen was a big pot of black coffee and some vegetable curry. I dislike both of these things but at the time I just needed sustenance. Up until that point I had never eaten any cooked food while tripping and so I’m not sure if it was because of how hungry I was or from the latent effects of the mushrooms but I have never eaten such an amazing meal in my life. All the flavours became stronger and I could taste every ingredient. The coffee became rich and had a natural sweetness to it. Hands down best meal of my life. We sat for what felt like ages on Geoff’s kitchen floor devouring the curry and drinking cup after cup of coffee. It was a feast fit for the gods.
We only managed to smoke 3 grams of the Sceletium but the combination with mushrooms was fantastic. We split up the rest of the Sceletium and went home. I smoked a bong or two of Sceletium every morning for about a week after the trip which made me awake and alert almost instantly. Since then I always try get Sceletium whenever possible because (a) it is ridiculously cheap here in South Africa and (b) it is the best thing to have in the morning if I needed to be alert and awake in a hurry. The combo of Sceletium, pot and mushrooms even with such small amounts felt almost as good as my first trip.
