Fabulous Solstmas to all of you! We hope everyone is getting to
spend a few days doing something fun, or exciting, or relaxing,
depending on what you need. We've been spending some time this season trying to figure out
Erowid's path forward. With the death of a major funder in October,
we are faced with significant funding challenges in 2012. We'll be
writing more about this in January, but for now... if you have space
for end-of-year charitable giving, we need your help. Erowid.org/donations/
Drunkenness Criminalized: In 1606, the British Parliament passed
"The Act to Repress the Odious and Loathsome Sin of Drunkenness".
Requiring those convicted to pay their fines to the local church
parish, the Act begins: "Whereas the loathsome and odious Sin of
Drunkenness is of late grown into common Use within this Realm, being
the Root and Foundation of many other enormous Sins, as Bloodshed,
Stabbing, Murder, Swearing, Fornication, Adultery, and such like..."

Given how much power the reaction of a drug dog and its handler's
interpretations can have, it is striking how few studies have looked
at their abilities and accuracy. Earth Erowid discusses research into
drug dog practices and implications for the U.S. Fourth Amendment.

This month Earth and Fire spent three weeks traveling in Australia,
starting near Melbourne and the Entheogenesis Australis (EGA) event,
then spending time in Sydney and northern New South Wales. We'll be
writing more about our trip in the future, but for now, we wanted to
say how incredibly well-produced the EGA event was. We were greeted
warmly, treated wonderfully, and introduced to a broad community of
articulate, inspired artists, scientists, botanists, tech workers,
farmers, students, and explorers of all sorts.
Meanwhile, Sylvia and Jon joined MAPS at its Oakland, California conference.
They appreciated getting to meet Erowid supporters and members as well
as hosting a meet-and-greet book signing with Sasha and Ann Shulgin
at the Erowid table.
While Japan is known for having a hardline stance toward illegal
psychoactives, including cannabis, it was paradoxically one of the
earliest countries to feature a research chemical market.
