Notes from the May, 2000 Conference of the
California Association of Toxicologists

Page 11

The Social Hour was an enjoyable time in the bar of the hotel, hosted by one of the vendors, where each person was given tickets for free drinks. I was too tired to drink anything but caffeinated coke since I had to get in my car and drive to the airport at 8pm, so I gave my tickets to the folks staying in the hotel that night.

I had a great time talking to some of the toxicologists and criminologists and hearing their perspectives on the current policies and problems. While we certainly come from different perspectives and have different experiences, we could all agreed that driving intoxicated wasn't OK, that real problems exist around psychoactives, and that the public policy issues are complicated. All of the people I talked to on the subject (a fairly small number, perhaps 10-12 or so) agreed that the current public policies around drugs are not a long term solution.

Finally, on my way home, I found myself in an excellent mood. I wonder what they put in my coke.
