Agurell et al. 1969; recommended the use of Chloroform-Pyridine (6:1) on Formamide impregnated paper (FCP) or else tlc with Methanol-glacial Acetic acid-Water (75:10:15) on Silica Gel G for the separation of tryptamines and b-carbolines.

Ghosal et al. 1971; used Silica Gel G chromatoplates and Methyl alcohol-Chloroform-Acetic acid (75:25:15) as developer. This system provided a better separation of Harmaline (lowest Rf) from the other two; than Harmine (highest Rf) from Tetrahydroharmine.

Hochstein & Paradies 1957; reported the use of a Chloroform-Formamide system [citing Hochstein et al. 1955.] This system provided a better separation of Harmine (highest Rf) from the other two; than Harmaline (lowest Rf) from Tetrahydroharmine.
