Making an Apple Pipe
by Kyle Gancarz
Jul 8, 2005
The process of making an apple pipe is very simple. It is also a very discrete way of smoking a variety of plant materials (such as weed or a variety of other things I'm sure.) You'll need a BIC-style pen or something similar, an apple, a lighter, and something to smoke. If you feel like eating the apple afterwards you might want to take the ink well out of the pen, otherwise, on the top of the apple, jam the pen in at a slight angle about half way through the apple. You will want to do this next to the core rather than having to make another hole through the hardest part of the apple. The next step is going to require some judgement. You'll want to poke a hole on the opposite side near the bottom or middle so that it meets up with the first hole you poked.

The next part is optional, but preferred. Using the same technique an inch or a little more from the top hole, jam a third hole that will meet up with your existing chamber system. This "carb" can be essentially anywhere on the apple, but you'll want it to be convienient to cover with a finger while you're lighting your weed.

Finally, you'll want to carve out a bowl on the top of the apple where the first hole was drilled. Make it big enough to hold the material you want to smoke. This can be done by "eating" it essentially. The best way is to carefully gnaw away with one of your sharp teeth so that it's more precise, but you can also use a key or just about anything.

This system is very rough, but it is not intended to be used repeatedly or kept. You'll put the weed in the top, light it while holding the carb and inhale through the other end, then when you've had as much smoke as you want, release the carb and take the rest of the smoke left in the apple. It's the same concept and method as a pipe, but the materials used are less conspicuous, more readily available (if you're a college or high school student you can get them in your school cafeteria for free usually) and easy to dispose of. Ultimately, if you're caught or just want to dispose of it after use, you can eat it. The resin will taste a little odd but there's really nothing dangerous to consume, it might even get you a little more high.

Precise drilling and experience are the only ways to really improve on the system. With a little ingenuity you can find a system that works to make the hole at the bottom of the bowl smaller, such as taking a chuck of the apple and jamming it in there with a smaller hole in it, or just taking a smaller chunk and covering all but a little bit of the hole.

All in all, it's not a great everyday smoking technique, but good if you're going to the beach, smoking in a place where you have a high risk of being seen (because it's easy to dispose of,) or are simply looking for a new or cheap and easy way to smoke.
