“Experimental analysis of the inhibitory action of lysergic acid diethylamide on cortical dendritic activity.”.
Ann. N.Y. Acad. Sc.. 1957;66:515.
Abstract
Studies in cats (Purpura: Arch.Neurol.Psychiat., 75: 122, 1956) have shown that LSD inhibits dendritic responses. As the dendrites are only activated synaptically, LSD must have a synaptic site of action. It is thought that LSD activates inhibitor synapses accessible to transmitter substances released by reticular stimulation of the brainstem as shown in cross-circulation studies. The net result of the action of LSD appears to be an EEG pattern resembling that of arousal. This may represent a competitive type of blockade of reticulocortical synapses.
