Abstract
Acetylcholine, 5-hydroxytryptamine and an unidentified substance (substance X) were found in the spinal fluid of a large percentage of 70 patients with head injuries, brain tumors or other neurological disorders. . The substances were assayed on the heart of the clam (Venus mercenaria), LSD and mytolon being used as agents specifically blocking 5-hydroxytryptamine and acetylcholine, respectively. . Acetylcholine and 5-hydroxytryptamine, but not substance X, were also detected in the spinal fluid of 14 dogs subjected to experimental concussion. .
