Abstract
Mice were sensitized with normal horse serum. All drugs were administered prior to a challenging dose and the protection offered was assessed by the survival of the sensitized mice compared with the incidence of fatal anaphylaxis in untreated sensitized mice. . Agents exerting maximum protection were chlorpromazine, promazine, reserpine, LSD, prednisolone, prednisone, fluoro-hydrocortisone, hydrocortisone and cortisone. . Inactive agents were meprobamate, sedatives and antihistamines, anti-inflammatory agents, diuretics and predominantly sodium-retaining steroids. . Effective agents appear to be primarily . a) natriuretic rather than sodium-retaining, . b) capable of stimulating increases in adrenal hormone levels, . c) adrenergic in terms of epinephrine enhancement, . d) tranquilizers with marked effects on behavior, . e) antagonists of serotonin
