Abstract
LSD provides an effective method of overcoming the resistance of mental patients to psychotherapy. It causes a re-living of previous experiences, mobilizing painful and repressed affects, and allowing the patient to become aware of his feelings. Unconscious material is often liberated in the form of hallucinations and perceptual changes. Dramatic insight may be obtained. However, these affects may in turn mobilize the defences of the patient, leading to splitting of transference, isolation and even conscious withholding of material. The LSD experiences may then be used to help maintain the resistance of the patient where desired.
