Abstract
Helmlin et al. describe in their article the pharmacological profile of methylenedioxymetharnphetamine (MDMA, Ecstasy) in the framework of a controlled clinical study of two subjects. The concentrations of MDMA and methylenedioxyamphetamine (MDA) were determined in serum extract after solid-phase extraction (SPE) by means of high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC)-UV. Additionally the metabolites, mainly excreted in the glucuronide or sulfate form were predominantly identified in urine, after hydrolysis and SPE.
The plasma profile shown in Figure 5 in the Helmlin and co-workers article (1) seems to be especially interesting because the applied dose (1.5mg MDMA/kg bodyweight) corresponds approximately to the average ingested dose of MDMA of a consumer during a visit to a disco. Hence. the delay in breakdown of the parent drug is of particular importance concerning active participation in road traffic. In such cases, there is still presumably an acute influencing effect many hours afterthe original ingestion. This is in accordance with our observation that Ecstasy and related substances are detected more frequently in our investigations of DWI cases.
