Abstract
Within the frame-work of this Kretschmer Festschrift, attention is drawn to the importance of the reticular formation (RF), discovered by Magoun and Moruzzi, for Kretschmer's "multidimensional psychiatric diagnosis and therapy": the RF is the point of intersection of this multidimensionality" and the capacity of the RF represents the "affective" level. . The RF is activated by adrenalin, ephedrine, amphetamine, acetylcholine, LSD, etc., i.e. these drugs elicit an arousal reaction (non-specific cortical arousal with EEG desynchronization). . The RF is inhibited by all anesthetics, barbiturates, atropine, scopolamine, chlorpromazine, meprobamate, morphine, etc. i.e. these drugs inhibit desynchronization on peripheral and reticular stimulation. . The importance of the brain-stem for mental experience is discussed and the interplay between effects on affect and somatic functions is explained as due to variations in the function of the RF. . The effect of drugs on autonomic regulation is indicated in "broad ban diagrams" of young and elderly persons. Thus the effect of 70 mcg. LSD i.v. on blood pressure, heart rate, respiratory rate, chronaxia, autonomic symptoms, activity and mood was determined before and 15, 30, 45, 60, and 120 minutes after injection.
