Abstract
Four cases (normal male subjects aged 21-34) are presented who illustrate the relationship between personality and paranoid response. After a control interview 3 were given 100 mcg. LSD and one 150 mcg. LSD orally. Each case is briefly described. Personality features which predispose to a paranoid reaction are: fear of closeness with other persons of the same sex (case 4) and a tendency to use the defence mechanism of projection. The qualities are best identified by investigation of current interpersonal relations or by the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory, but the latter is not sufficient. A certain amount of clinical judgement is also necessary. . The LSD response is directly proportional to the dosage but the quality of the response is the same at various dose levels (except in low doses under 0.5 mcg/kg). Paranoid reactions often begin when the subject is given extra attention ("closeness" with people). It cannot be forecast whether a subject will have a paranoid reaction after LSD or not. This depends not only on the subject but also on the manner in which he is handled. Prolonged reactions with harmful consequences to the subject should be prevented as far as possible by screening of volunteers.
