Abstract
In the acute experiment (AE) 5 dogs were given 2000-5000 mcg. LSD i.v. and in the chronic experiment (CE) 5 different dogs were given 200-300 mcg. LSD daily for 12 days. The dogs were sacrificed 6 hours after the AE and 30 days after the CE. . In the AE the animals showed tension and irritation, catatonia-like stupor and hallucinatory symptoms, while in the CE, behavior disorder was significant in only one dog. Marked autonomic changes were observed in the AE: increased heart and respiratory rate as well as hyperpyrexia. In the CE the blood pressure was elevated only for a short time. Autonomic symptoms and behavior disorders were considered to be a result of the acute sympathetic irriation syndrome. In the AE the intoxication with LSD (5000 mcg.) was successfully abolished by the excellent antidote chemical (amytal sodium). . the blood picture showed leucocytosis in both experiments: eosinophilia ____ more marked in the CE than in the AE: bilirubin, thymol turbidity, Cu, ____ alkaline phosphatase were increased (liver damage) or in any case high _____ the CE values. After the CE bilirubin, alkaline phosphatase and cholesterol were increased in several dogs. The increase in the albumin fraction and the decrease of the gamma globulin fraction was characteristic for the CE. . Histological studies revealed slight edema and small hemorrhages in the CNS (especially basal ganglia and Ammon's horn). Degenerative changes were observed in liver and spleen. No changes occurred in the endocrine glands except in the pancreas. . (See 804)
