Abstract
Patients with chronic neuroses, chronic psychosomatic disorders and personality disorders received LSD in doses of 50 to 300 mcg. . Three types of reaction were observed in 37 cases: . 1. Good catharsis (22 cases). Twelve were much improved. Four completely free of symptoms. . 2. Unspecified response (6 cases), in which the patients were able to express hostility and sibling rivalry. Three of them were greatly improved, one completely free of symptoms. . 3. Response only with slight autonomic symptoms and toxic effects (9 cases); 4 were greatly improved, 3 completely free of symptoms. . Besides abreaction, other factors definitely affected the results. The more recent the onset of symptoms, the better the results. . Patients with acute anxiety superimposed on a basically passive, dependent personality did not respond well to LSD and might become suicidal. Poor results were noted in patients with a long-term hysterical personality with hypochondria and paranoid features (LSD may stimulate the paranoid features) and cases of narcissistic, and hysterical type who were shy and fearful.
