Abstract
A technique for the identification of LSD by means of fluorescence spectra is reported; it was hoped that this would allow its identity to be established in emergency cases. Samples of street-grade LSD were taken up in 0.01N HCl and fluorescence spectra obtained with emission 425 nm and 15 nm bandpass (scan A) (excitation spectra) or with excitation at 340 nm and 15 nm bandpass (scan C) (emission spectra). The samples were then adjusted to give a solution of about 0.01M NaCl-and - 0.05M Na2HPO4; fluorescence spectra were obtained (scans B and D) under the conditions used for scans A and C. Fluorescent spectra were also obtained for gastric extract alone, diluted extracted ipecac end extracted ipecac spiked with LSD. The ipecac was studied because it is used to induce emesis and it is useful to identify LSD in its presence. It was shown that LSD could be characterized under all the conditions studied by determining emission and excitation peaks and their shifts in going from acid to alkaline conditions; possible interference from unidentified fluorogens which may also be present in gastric contents was not eliminated. A case was reported in which a 23-mth male infant was admitted having ingested 1 LSD tablet 2 hr previously; he was hysterical and hyperreactive. The patient was given 15 ml ipecac syrup ; and 30 ml water, this producing a 200 rnl sample of gastric fluid. 2 Hr later the patient had calmed considerably and within I further hr recognized his mother. Recovery was then uneventful.
