Abstract
The interaction between psychotomimetic compounds and 6-methylpurine was studied in aqueous solution. Solutions of N,N-dimethyltryptamine (DMT), serotonin, mescaline (all from Fluka), amphetamine (Merck-Darmstadt) and LSD (Sandoz) were mixed with 6-methylpurine (m6Pur) in deuterate d water containing 2, 2, 3, 3 -tetradeute ro - 3 -trime thylsilylpurine (reference). NMR Spectra were recorded at pD 5.4 (acetate buffer) for LSD and pD 7.4 (phosphate buffer) for all the others. The interactions were also studied by osmometry. Serotonin “nteracted with m6Pur due mainly to a ring-ring interaction. The interactions of DMT, serotonin, mescaline and amphetamine witb m6Pur resembled those with LSD. The side-chains of these compounds appeared to have a reduced rotational ability as a result of such an interaction leaving them in a more extended position, which resembled the LSD molecule. The interaction with m6Pur involved the aromatic ring system and was different to the mode of self association.
