Abstract
Copulatory behaviour in the ovariectomized rat, the lordosis response (L.R.) on mounting by a male, is induced by oestrogen followed by progesterone. L.R. has been shown to be inhibited dose dependently by lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD). This effect was enhanced, mainly prolonged by pretreatment with p-chlorophenylalanine but not in analogous experiments with a-methyltyrosine (Eliasson, M. & B.J. Meyerson, Psychopharmacology, 1976.49.301-306). The effects of different doses of oestradiol benzoate (OEB; 10, 25 mcg/kg s.c.) and progesterone (PROG. 0.4, 1.0, 4.0 mg/rat) on the inhibitory action of LSD on L.R. was studied in ovariectomized Sprague-Dawley rats (N=72). PROG. was given 48 has after OEB treatment and LSD (50, 100 mcg/kg i.p.) injected 5 has after PROG. treatment. L.R. was tested 10, 40 and 180 min after the LSD inj. The LSD action was not influenced by different doses of OEB; but clearly enhanced with increasing doses of PROG. The results suggest an interaction of PROG. on the lordosis inhibitory action of LSD.
