Abstract
At the present time, psychotherapy is based almost exclusively on verbal interchange. To the superficial observer, it appears that the whole process would come to a grinding halt if either or both participants were forbidden speech. On closer inspection, however, something important appears to be going on between doctor and patient which is totally independent of any verbal flow. Many of the most important moments of life transcend the use of words, in fact words often interfere with experience. Far more than we know, body movements, facial expression, tones of voice, and actions convey the main flow of communication, rather than words.
