Abstract
The effect of varying doses of LSD and 5-hydroxytraptamine (5-HT) on the electrical phenomena of the rat's visual cortex was investigated. The amplitude of evoked potentials was not changed by 0.1 and 1.0 mg/kg LSD i.p. It was reduced to 70% by 10 mg/kg. The number of photic after-discharges was increased by 0.1 and 1.0 mg/kg LSD but was not influenced by 10 mg/kg. The slow hippocmapal rhythm was more regular after the administration of 10 mg/kg LSD. The effect of 10 mg/kg 5-HT on the amplitude of the evoked potentials and the number of photic after-discharges was short lasting. However, the amplitude of primary potentials by flicker light (10 flashes/sec) and the photic recruiting were reduced to 40%. Fifty mg/kg 5-HT also considerably decreased the amplitude of the evoked potentials. When 50 mg/kg 5-HT were administered the control values of the number of photic after-discharges were again reached as soon as the evoked potentials were increased to 40%. After 60 min the photic after-discharges were enhanced and the photic recruiting decreased to 200f the control values. The results are discussed with regard to the effects of LSD and 5-HT on the corpus geniculatum laterale and the non-specific systems.
