Abstract
Users of libraries are not immune to ill health. Enter any public library and the cacophony of suppressed coughing and sneezing should reassure one on this point. However the threat to physical well being from such an innocent occupation has lately attracted a flurry of medical interest, fuelled by a study of the colonisation of library books by bacteria, mainly Staphylococcus epidermidis.
