Abstract
The fungus Amanita muscaria (L. ex Fr.) Quel., with the unmistakable brilliant orange-red cap, flecked with white fragments of it volva, is found in birch and pine woods from summer to late autumn. The epithet, muscaria, refers to its former use as a fly poison and hece the common name "fly agaric". The genus Amanita is said to be probably responsible for the majority of cases of mushroom poisoning and, although the deadly A. phalloides causes most fatalities, occasionally A. muscaria has proved fatal.
