Abstract
The past decade has witnessed a dramatic increase in the use of cartoons in drug education and prevention programs. These cartoons have been incorporated into both animated films (NIDA 1978) and printed materials (U.S. Journal of Drug and Alcohol Dependence 1980). Films have included full-length features on drug using
animated characters (Starks 1982), short subjects with antidrug messages from famous characters such as Goofy, and Saturday morning television cartoons with antidrug
references. Most of these films are directed at youthful audiences.
